“Like wildflowers; you must allow yourself to grow in all the places people thought you never would. -E.V. “
I recently graduated from college, I am still in shock that someone finally let me out of their school! As many times as I transferred someone allowed me to finally walk across the stage and receive my degree, even though it comes in the mail later in the year! Other than that I have been reflecting on my experience and decisions I made through my journey and I thought it would be fitting to write some major key things that I wish I knew before my freshman year! However, because I experienced it I can now pass it on to you and hopefully it can touch someone and help them through their four of five years of college and make it a little bit easier for them!
1. Learning how to Compromise.
When it comes to dealing with professors, friends or even faculty members I always felt I had to compromise. For example, you could be struggling with a class and no matter how hard you study nothing is working and to top it off you dont have the easy going professor! You might have to just go get help, sacrifice your time to make sure you get the grade and result you want, its all about finding a middle ground.
2. Your roomie does not have to be your friend.
I know how that sounds, but its the truth. Your roommate should not be your only friend, you should want to remain agreeable with her/him, but that does not mean you have to hang out with just them! College is about having fun and starting anew as a young adult so go out and explore find your tribe!
3. College is what you make it.
College is supposed to be the best years of your life. If you ask me about my time in school, of course I will have some regrets, but without those decisions I would not be the person I am today. If you decide to transfer like me, make sure you want to for the right reasons ! If you choose to stay at your school get involved and make sure you create a equal balance of social and academics that allows you to succeed.
4. Allow yourself time to grow.
For me, I was always rushing the process of growing and trying to find the quickest way to get to the next point. Sometimes you need to step back and realize that sometimes you go through certain things for different reasons. Just like the people you may meet or the people who you date, enjoy the time you have and cherish it and make sure you are letting it happen and not trying to rush what could have been a blessing!
5. Always stay true to YOU.
I cannot say this enough. Although college may be the best time of your life it can put you through some tough obstacles. Peer Pressure is definitely real and making certain decisions can impact the rest of your time in school. The best way to stay true to yourself is to remember why you’re there and to make sure you have fun and create a healthy balance between your social and academic life.
